AMPALAYA MONOLOGUES
Ampalaya Monologues is a collection of short monologues about love, heartache and bitterness. Inspired by another episodic play Vagina Monologues, the show tells stories of individuals who’ve tasted the different kinds of bitterness that love has to offer. The play is written by Mark Ghosn and performed by actors of Theatre in Alternative Platforms (TAP). It was first staged in front of a full house audience in August 2015 and was received with rave reviews.
Since then, the show has been featured in different TV shows, websites and news channels. It had sold-out shows in the country’s prime venues such as The PETA Theatre and The Cultural Center of the Philippines.
Today, Ampalaya Monologues has been recreated into different versions (LoveWins, BitterSweet, SingleBells, etc.). And what started as 5, has evolved into almost 50 monologues, 27 of which has been published nationwide as a book. With sold-out shows, viral videos, news articles, television and out of town appearances, and an upcoming nationwide full-length movie, Ampalaya Monologues is now known as one of the most successful episodic plays in the country.
The success of Ampalaya Monologues is also recognized as one of the main factors that contributed to the rise of the spoken word community in the Philippines. Aside from TAP actors being the most known spoken word artists when it comes to monologues, the recognition is also related to how the show features the best spoken word poets in the country today.
